Applying Your Power
“The main difference between you and someone else is how you apply your power.” - The Mastery of Love, Don Miguel Ruiz
I’d like to offer the invitation to take a moment to breathe into this wisdom. “How you apply your power” makes the direct assertion that you have power. You are powerful. How does that feel to allow yourself to recognize and acknowledge that you are powerful?
This is not coming from an egotistical, narcissistic place where you’re falsely convinced that you are more powerful than everyone else around you. And not from a place of being convinced that you have power, but from a grounded truth that just as you have been given the gift of being a human and having a life, you also have been given the gift of power.
The power of creativity.
The power of freedom of choice.
The power of love.
Each day we get to use this powerful energy to create what our day looks like, what investments we make in relationships, work, and ourselves. We are choosing how to use this power in every moment, regardless of whether or not we embrace that fact.
When we are spending time and energy worrying, we are giving our power to worry, fear, and helplessness. When we are spending time and energy stressed, we are giving our power to the belief that we’re not going to figure it out or work through it; on some level we believe we are going to be taken down.
What happens when we choose to give more power - more time, attention, and focus to things that bring us calm, peace, joy and inspiration? I (Tina) engage with a content on TikTok that tends to be quite wholesome; unlikely animal friendships, UPS drivers giving dogs treats, you know the kind of stuff that is either called “cheesy” or if you let it, melts your heart. When I engage with this kind of content, it helps me open back up to the energy I want to be creating my life with. I want to engage with the world from a place of warmth, love, and genuine care - even when I’m paying taxes or waiting on a seemingly endless hold with the state of Florida business division (don’t ask).
We have endless power that we are yielding in every interaction, decision, and even thought. Is it possible or even desirable to try to control every thought or action and ensure they are all perfect expressions of love? Of course not, we’re human, we get hangry, tired, or distressed. What if we spent just a few more minutes each day being mindful of how we are spending our precious energy and how we are using this infinite power that we each have been given?
To me, that invitation feels possible and useful. It feels like I may actually make a difference in my own life, and by extension the lives of others, if I simply take a few extra moments to use my power wisely.
What is one intention you’d like to set to use your power more wisely?
